Get Outside

This shot was taken at Red River Gorge in Eastern Kentucky. We don't like to display images in this manner but blogspot is obviously having some problems today and I must go and get outside. I tried two different images and both have these bad pixel lines streaked across them. We will try and fix tomorrow.

Full Moon at Cumberland Falls

Cumberland Falls is one of the few places in which you can see a moonbow (a rainbow caused by a full moon at a waterfall). We highly recommend exploring the surrounding area and camping for a few days here.

Bourbon Barrels

White Oak bourbon barrels in Central Kentucky at the Buffalo Trace distillery. White Oak barrels are used only once for bourbon and then sold to Ireland and Scotland to help flavor Scotch and Irish Whiskey. The inside of the barrel is charred first enhancing the woods ability to leach its flavor and color. Boubon is only officially made in Bourbon County, KY using the iron-free limestone water and the white oak barrels.

It's taxing

We didn't have any images of cash or IRS buildings so I went into the archives to find some things that are heavily taxed. The only reason these things are heavily taxed is because they are sought after items. Enjoy your April 15th! We in no way promote drinking or smoking, on Tuesdays.

Eagle Falls, KY

This image is pretty much just as it looks. It was a warm summer day in a beautiful location. These are some of Barry's now-graduated photo students who are enjoying a relaxing swim after lugging all of thier gear through the woods, in the heat to get to this spot.

It would make a pretty bedspread

This a simple macro of a weed in Kentucky. I've always wanted to model my bedroom colors after it.

Cow Killer Wasp

This lovely little creature is a wasp. It is often mistaken for a Queen ant. They are non-aggressive unless attacked or stepped on. The nickname cow killer is from the tremendous pain that is felt by the person who steps on it with barefeet. Of course, I knew none of this as I let it crawl all over my hands while trying to get a good shot. This was taken with a 60mm macro in Central Kentucky along the Cumberland River.

That's why we pray, Mantis

In macro photography lighting is everything. This guy was just walking around in the backyard. My husband approached him with a model release form and the rest is captured forever in this stunning photo.

Fermentation

This is a big vat of fermenting grain in the Makers Mark distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Makers is still distilling the old fashioned way and even dipping each bottle by hand. Touring the bourbon trail in central KY makes for an awesome get away.

Cincinnati Sunset

Cincinnati is not a place known for it's sunsets. Most shots of Cincinnati are taken at night from one of the bridges that cross the mighty Ohio River because of the lack of sky. We were able to find this location just up the street from us on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River Valley. Because of the hills here it is very hard to get a decent sunset. This just happened to be a lucky day for it.

Human aspects in Nature

This lichen covered rock face is in Southwestern Kentucky. A smile is worth a thousand words. I wish my dentist had this picture on his ceiling.

I only have eyes for you

We love playing around with our Nikkor 60mm macro. This spider didn't appear to have any colors besides brown. It was hard to get him/her to just sit there since it is in its nature to jump. A little bit of patience and a lot a bit of refrigeration helped to get this lovely shot.

Bee Rock Kentucky

It's way to hot to go outside right now so I am posting a special Sunday edition of Hovland Photo pic of the day. A little flower power.
