Go Baltimore

The other bird that is not in the AFC playoff's. We came all the way to Costa Rica to see a East Coast bird on holiday! These birds are beautiful, even when wet. They love bananas and mangos. We set the fruit (on a homemade coconut/bamboo stand)out a few days before Barry intends to shoot, then a day or two before we set up some sheets or towels as a blind to get them used to that. Barry then sets a flash (with a better beamer) just off camera to highlight the eye and fill in the shadows, just a touch.

Parrot Feather

Our Christmas colors are green and orange this year. This is our first holiday season in Costa Rica and we are celebrating it by enjoying the diversity of life here. This is a parrot feather up close and personal. We see parrots and toucans everyday here and hope that we will continue to in the future. When you are unwrapping your cherished gifts please remember that cardboard, plastics and glass can all be made into something new. Without nature we are nothing.

Sunrise at Mesa arch in Canyonlands National Park

This was taken yesterday morning around 7:45 am at Canyonlands National Park in Utah. It's early November so the sun is in a different place and rises much later. Canyonlands NP is just a short distance from Arches National Park in Eastern Utah. It makes for a wonderful few days. The food and beer in Moab makes for an all around good vacation spot.

Cow Killer Wasp

This lovely little creature is a wasp. It is often mistaken for a Queen ant. They are non-aggressive unless attacked or stepped on. The nickname cow killer is from the tremendous pain that is felt by the person who steps on it with barefeet. Of course, I knew none of this as I let it crawl all over my hands while trying to get a good shot. This was taken with a 60mm macro in Central Kentucky along the Cumberland River.

They called me eight eyes in school

So the title is not all that great but it's all I could come up with. Kids used to call me four eyes in 6th grade so at least it means something to me. This nursery web spider has eight eyes & eight legs. It carries it's little spider babies in its jaws and then creates a beautiful web for them to hatch in. They are very protective mommies.

Sundown I think it's a shame

Sun going down in Red River Gorge geological area in KY. Most days the sun is enveloped by the thick moisture laden fog that sits atop the river. There are beautiful sandstone cliffs that look over the entire area. We use the book "Hinterlands" by Jerrell Goodpastor to guide us to the least visited cliffs with the best light.
